Steen Larsen was born in Copenhagen 1960 and is a Danish realist painter and photographer using roads and streets as a source in his artworks. He studied at the Free Art School in DK and Dartington college of Arts in the UK. Larsen is part of a small group of artists using the mimetic approach in their work – meaning they reflect reality through precision in both detail and expression. Conceptually his work with urban settings are focusing on the tracks mankind leave behind in nature.
While driving and traveling through USA and Europe, Larsen mounts a camera on the windshield of his car and shoots thousands of photos that later serves as sketches for his oil paintings. His photo-based paintings are narratives mimicking a road movie on canvas. Speed is captured at its essences as well as other present daily scenes.
Steen Larsen has had residency at ESKFF located at MANA Contemporary Art Centre, NJ, and at Galleri Ramfjord Artist collective in Oslo.
For the past 10 years Steen Larsen has participated in exhibitions at Townley Gallery, Laguna Beach, B-Complex Gallery Atlanta, Van Der Plas Gallery, New York, Vertical Gallery Chicago, Novado Gallery, Jersey City, USA, Painting and Its Contexts, Contemporary Art Center Vilnius, LT, Nordic Noir Art, Round tower Copenhagen, DK
